The Indian Navy is set to purchase naval guns and ammunition worth $1.02bn under a potential deal approved by the Trump administration.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has notified the US Congress of a possible sale of up to 13 5in 62-calibre MK 45 (MOD 4) naval guns to India.

If the US lawmakers approve the sale, India could also buy 3,500 D349 Projectile, 5in/54 MK 92 MOD 1 ammunition and other ammunition.
The sale package also includes spare parts, training, technical and logistics support.
The Indian Navy will use the BAE Systems-built MK 45 naval guns to conduct antisurface warfare and anti-air defence missions.
The deal will allow the Asian nation to improve interoperability with the US and other allies.

By GlobalDataDefense Security Cooperation Agency said in a press release: “This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the US by improving the security of a strategic regional partner.
“The proposed sale will improve India’s capability to meet current and future threats from enemy weapon systems.”
BAE Systems will serve as the prime contractor for the potential foreign military sale.
Once the deal is approved, the Indian government will negotiate with the company to define contract terms.
In service with the US Navy, the Mk 45 Mod 4 Naval Gun system provides improved naval surface fire support (NSFS) with a range of over 36km.
BAE Systems is under contract to modernise the US Navy’s existing Mk45 guns to the Mod 4 configuration.
The enhancements in the configuration include improved gun and mount subsystems and a longer 62-calibre barrel.
