Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a press release: “This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the US by improving the security of a strategic regional partner.

“The proposed sale will improve India’s capability to meet current and future threats from enemy weapon systems.”

BAE Systems will serve as the prime contractor for the potential foreign military sale.

Once the deal is approved, the Indian government will negotiate with the company to define contract terms.

In service with the US Navy, the Mk 45 Mod 4 Naval Gun system provides improved naval surface fire support (NSFS) with a range of over 36km.

BAE Systems is under contract to modernise the US Navy’s existing Mk45 guns to the Mod 4 configuration.

The enhancements in the configuration include improved gun and mount subsystems and a longer 62-calibre barrel.
