The Finnish Defence Forces’ Logistics Command is set to sign contracts with Patria Aviation for the modernisation of the Finnish Navy’s Hamina-class fast attack missile crafts (FACs).

The deal will see Patria Aviation carry the major responsibility for the €223m vessel upgrade programme, which will involve the installation of a new torpedo weapon system acquired from Saab Dynamics.

Finland’s FAC vessels are to be equipped with the Surface Warfare Missile 2020 system under the initiative, which is due to be selected in 2018.

"The vessel upgrade will be carried out to extend the service-life of the Hamina-class FACs until 2035, in addition to extending the ships’ independent operating time."

The Hamina-class ships’ entire upgrade process is expected to create the equivalent of approximately 300 man-years of domestic employment.

The FAC refit is intended to ensure sufficient naval defence readiness for the Finnish Navy into the 2020s following the decommissioning of the Rauma-class FAC and prior to the launch of the future Squadron 2020 corvettes.

Furthermore, the vessel upgrade will be carried out to extend the service-life of the Hamina-class FACs until 2035, in addition to extending the ships’ independent operating time and enhancing their anti-submarine warfare and self-protection capabilities.

The surface-to-surface missile batteries and Squadron 2020 corvettes will be equipped with the same type of missile as part of the project.

The Swedish Navy will conduct a user training programme in support of the development, while the FMV will deliver sub-systems for practising purposes.

These initiatives are intended to ensure the personnel are familiarised and prepared for operational activities without any delay once the modernisation of the Hamina-class FACs is completed.
