Fincantieri has delivered the forward section of the first of the French Navy’s four Jacques Chevallier-class logistic support ships (LSS).

The LSSs are being built by a temporary consortium between Chantiers de l’Atlantique and Naval Group under the Flotte Logistique (FLOTLOG) programme.

The section was delivered on 6 November at Fincantieri’s Castellammare di Stabia (Naples) shipyard in Italy.

Fincantieri noted that the FLOTLOG programme for four fleet replenishment tankers is led by Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation (OCCAR) on behalf of the French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA) and its Italian counterpart La Direzione degli Armamenti Navali (NAVARM).

Under the programme, Fincantieri will construct the forward sections of the four LSSs.

The vessels will be deployed to provide logistical support for the French Navy’s combat ships.

With a full loaded displacement of 31,000t, the LSS is 194m long, 27.6m wide and can accommodate 190 people, including 130 crew members and 60 passengers.

The characteristics of the vessels will be modified to support their mission profiles around the navy’s flagship aircraft carrier, Charles de Gaulle.

Deliveries of the four supply ships will take place by 2029.

GE recently announced that the first MV7000 drives have cleared factory acceptance tests.

Systems will be provided for the four LSSs as part of contract signed between GE Power Conversion and Chantiers de l’Atlantique last year.

In March this year, Fincantieri’s Naval Integrated shipyard delivered the first vessel, LSS Vulcano, to the Italian Navy.

The 193m-long LSS Vulcano LSS can accommodate a total of 235 people. This includes crew members and special officers.
