The Royal Navy has selected a 12.7-calibre-turret Lionfish Top system, which is one of the three variants of a remotely controlled gun system.

The gun system can be controlled through its local control console along with external rear handles for manual gun firing during emergencies.

The Lionfish Top variant weighs less than 300kg and is effective against close threats and in asymmetric warfare.

The gun system can be used for different operations including maritime traffic interdiction and border control.

The maximum detection range of Lionfish Top is 12km, based on the technology being implemented.

The company said that the selection of the system ‘highlights the strategic relationship between Leonardo and the Royal Netherlands Navy’.

The Lionfish Top also features a highly accurate sensors suite, which offers automatic tracking functionality, a daylight camera, an IR camera, and a LASER Range Finder.

In addition, the system has a cooled infrared sensor integrated with Leonardo’s Mini Colibrì optics, which offers long-range accuracy.

Recently, the RNLN has also selected Leonardo’s OTO 127/64 LW Vulcano systems for its four De Zeven Provinciën class multi-role vessels.
