Damen Marine Components has secured a new contract for the supply of major components for the Chilean Navy’s Antarctic Research vessel.
Damen Marine will be responsible for supplying steering gear, rudders and stern tube parts for the navy’s Antarctic I project under the Light’s Retention Scale (LRS) – Polar 5 Class notation.

The contract was awarded by Chile-based ASMAR Talcahuano Shipyard and covers the delivery of twin Commander Ram-Type electro-hydraulic steering gear units, twin Atlantic semi-spade rudders and twin stern tube casting parts.
The design of the Antarctic Research vessel has been carried out in collaboration with VARD Canada.

By GlobalDataThe 111m-long ship will be capable of travelling at speeds of up to 15k upon deployment with the Chilean Navy.
It has been designed to carry out a wide range of missions such as logistic support, search and rescue (SAR), and scientific research operations south of the Antarctic Polar Circle.
In addition, the Antarctic Research vessel will be capable of operating in icy waters and can navigate continuously at a constant speed of 3k over 500 kilopascal (kPa) flexural-strength ice of 1m thickness covered with a 20cm layer of snow.
Damen Marine Components will deliver the contracted components in 2020 and the new polar ship is slated to set sail on its first voyage to the Antarctic Polar Circle in 2023.
