Damen Shipyards Group launched the NRP D. João II, a multi-purpose vessel (MPV) 10720, for the Portuguese Navy at its Galati shipyard in Romania.
The launch event on 7 April 2026 was attended by representatives from the Portuguese and Romanian Naval Forces, along with the Portuguese and Dutch ambassadors to Romania.

The Portuguese Navy developed the initial concept for the MPV 10720 as a flexible naval platform able to undertake several operational roles including oceanographic research, environmental control, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and maritime surveillance and support.
At the time of signing the contract, Damen said that the 107-metre vessel will be capable of deploying uncrewed drones and helicopters. It will feature a stern ramp for uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs) and uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs) as well as a 94x11m flight deck and hangars for uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs).
The design process involved collaboration between Damen, the Portuguese Navy, suppliers, and strategic partners.
This cooperation also resulted in Damen developing its Multi-Purpose Support Ship (MPSS) range, which covers vessels of 7,000 to 9,000 tonnes and incorporates both military-grade technology and standardised solutions.
According to Damen, the vessel is designed for “unrestricted” operation in both tropical and temperate environments and features a high level of system autonomy.
Damen chief commercial officer Bram Langeveld said: “Given Portugal’s vast coastline, this ship is a valuable addition to both the Portuguese navy and European maritime operations. It will support maritime security, scientific research, and disaster relief efforts.
“The MPV 10720 is the result of the Portuguese Navy’s forward-thinking and innovative approach to meeting modern naval requirements. Damen has greatly valued the navy’s clear vision and constructive partnership, which has enabled efficient construction within a short timeframe.”
Damen secured the contract for the project in 2024, following a competitive tender. It was funded by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), through the NextGenerationEU programme and overseen by Recover Portugal (PRR).
The vessel is named after King D. João II of Portugal, who reigned from 1481 to 1495.
Sea trials are expected to take place later this year.
Once commissioned, the NRP D. João II will operate alongside the existing Damen-built frigates, NRP Bartolomeu Dias and, NRP D. Francisco de Almeida in the Portuguese Naval Fleet.
