German maritime defence solutions provider FLANQ has entered a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) to deliver autonomous maritime capabilities.
The partners will focus on the development and operational deployment of uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) for a range of missions including intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), critical national infrastructure (CNI) protection, environmental monitoring, and precision strike operations.

Both organisations will combine their expertise, with FLANQ contributing its autonomous surface platforms and CMMI offering its extensive maritime research capabilities.
FLANQ co-founder and chief commercial officer Daniel Esser said: “The Mediterranean remains one of the most dynamic and strategically vital regions in the world. By joining forces with CMMI, we can deliver autonomous maritime capabilities that combine scientific excellence with operational agility—strengthening security, resilience, and situational awareness for Cyprus and her regional partners.”
CMMI has received funding from both the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme and the Cyprus Government.
The agreement between FLANQ and CMMI underscores a shared commitment to transition autonomous surface vessel concepts from theoretical frameworks into practical applications that address the challenges faced in the Mediterranean theatre.
