The Brazilian Navy has started the final integration phase of its Scorpene-class submarine, Riachuelo S-40, at the Itaguaí Naval Complex in Rio.
A total of three sections of the navy vessel were transferred to the main construction building of the complex for final assembly activities, where they are expected to be welded during the first half of the year.

The sections have been manufactured and pre-equipped in Itaguai by the Brazilian shipyard Itaguaí Construções Navais (ICN), a subsidiary of Naval Group and Odebrecht.
Brazil’s Riachuelo S-40 is the first of four Scorpene-class submarines that are currently being constructed for the navy under a submarine development programme known as Prosub.
The three remaining submarines are expected to be built at an average rate of one per year.
Brazilian Navy commander admiral Eduardo Leal Ferreira said: “The programme has a multiplier effect for sectors of the economy, with the training of hundreds of engineers and technicians, in addition to the collaboration of national companies, high-value-added technology and trained professionals that stimulate the Defense Industrial Base and contribute to social and economic development.”

By GlobalDataThe 20-year Prosub programme was initially established in 2009 and also involves the development of another navy vessel, which is expected to be powered by nuclear propulsion.
The project has generated 4,500 direct and 11,200 indirect jobs to date, while another 32,000 employment opportunities are expected to be created by the end of the programme.
Riachuelo S-40 is expected to be launched later this year and is scheduled to be commissioned with the Brazilian Navy in 2020.
