The dock will facilitate the construction, maintenance, and ongoing support of these vessels.

General Dynamics Electric Boat, the prime contractor for the Columbia-class submarines, is responsible for designing and building these submarines.

The vessels will replace the Ohio-class Ballistic-Missile Submarines, which are scheduled for retirement in 2027.

The new class will be notably larger than any previous submarines constructed by the US, exceeding the size of the Virginia-class attack submarines by two-and-a-half times.

The delivery of Atlas represents the fulfilment of Bollinger Shipyards’ second contract with General Dynamics Electric Boat.

Bollinger Shipyards president and CEO Ben Bordelon said: “Bollinger Shipyards is proud to deepen our partnership with Electric Boat and take a leading role in strengthening America’s dry dock capacity with the delivery of the Atlas.

“This project isn’t just a build it’s a strategic investment in our Navy’s future. Modernising the fleet demands cutting-edge infrastructure, built right here at home. Bollinger is all-in on driving innovation, reinforcing the US industrial base, and delivering the tools our Navy needs to stay ahead.”

Previously in 2019, Bollinger Shipyards was tasked with constructing the 400ft by 100ft Ocean Transport Barge for General Dynamics Electric Boat, which was delivered as per schedule in 2021.

Currently, Bollinger Shipyards is engaged in building a pontoon launcher, another project that will facilitate the construction and launch process for the new fleet of ballistic-missile submarines.

Earlier in October 2025, US President Donald Trump made an announcement regarding Bollinger Shipyards’ selection for a new venture.

In partnership with Rauma Marine Constructions (Rauma), Seaspan Shipyards (Seaspan), and Aker Arctic Technology (Aker Arctic), Bollinger Shipyards will undertake the design and construction of six Arctic Security Cutters (ASC).
