The US Navy has selected Bechtel as one of the five teams to bid for the Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program (SIOP) contract.
Under the multi-year programme, the company will pursue the construction of new dry docks and infrastructure at Hawaii’s Pearl Harbor and Washington state’s Puget Sound shipyards.

According to Bechtel, the dry docks and related infrastructure will service existing and future nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers of the US Navy.
SIOP is a joint effort between Naval Sea Systems Command, Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command, and Navy Installations Command to upgrade four public naval shipyards to support the combat readiness of the US Navy.
The programme has a combined value of $8bn and runs until 2029.
Repairing and modernising dry docks, replacing ageing and deteriorating capital equipment, and restoring shipyard facilities are few of the works included in the SIOP programme.

By GlobalDataBechtel said that it will immediately start a constructability review and compete for task orders related to warehouses construction, two dry docks, and other waterfront facilities.
The Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard’s submarine dry dock will be over 650ft long, while Puget Sound Naval Shipyard’s is expected to be around 1,200ft long.
Bechtel Nuclear, Security & Environmental global business unit president John Howanitz said: “These shipyards perform a vital role in keeping navy vessels at sea, but they’re both more than 100 years old.
“Improving this vital infrastructure will be critical to help the navy maintain, modernise, and repair its ships and return them to the fleet on time.”
In September, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard held a ground-breaking ceremony, marking the commencement of work on the $1.7bn new multi-mission dry dock project.
In 2019, NAVSEA announced commencement of work on the 20-year, $21bn SIOP project to modernise four public naval shipyards.
