Netherlands-based company Bakker Sliedrecht has received a new order from Dutch shipyard Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding to provide the electrical auxiliary propulsion system for a SIGMA 10514 long-range patrol vessel.

The new electrical auxiliary propulsion system will feature two 1,325kW electric propulsion motors from Indar and two water-cooled variable-frequency drives with active front ends.

The two frequency drives will be cooled by a single water-cooling unit in order to save weight, space and costs.

Each of the two drives will be linked to the patrol vessel’s electricity grid, thereby eliminating the use of a transformer and reducing both weight and space.

The direct conductive coupling can adversely affect sensitive operational equipment connected to the power grid if certain measures are not adopted during connection.

In addition, Bakker Sliedrecht has developed new smart filter techniques to reduce the disturbance levels in order to comply with International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and navy regulations.

Bakker Sliedrecht’s concept has already been successfully integrated on-board a series of Indonesian Navy frigates.

The current order follows the successful collaboration between Damen and Bakker Sliedrecht during the development of the Indonesian Navy’s Perusak Kawal Rudal (PKR) guided missile frigates.

The new long-range patrol vessel is slated to be delivered in early 2020.

Bakker Sliedrecht previously delivered an electrical auxiliary propulsion system for the Indonesian Navy’s second and final PKR vessel earlier this month.

Additionally, Damen started construction of the Mexican Navy’s Sigma 10514 long-range patrol vessel at Vlissingen in the Netherlands in August.
