Netherlands-based company Bakker Sliedrecht has provided an electrical auxiliary propulsion system for the Indonesian Navy’s second and final Perusak Kawal Rudal (PKR) guided missile frigate.
The vessel has been delivered to the navy by Dutch shipyard Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding.

The frequency drives of the new auxiliary propulsion system are directly connected to the power grid in line with current EMC regulations.
Bakker Sliedrecht has equipped the electrical auxiliary propulsion system with two electric propulsion motors from Indar and two water-cooled, variable-frequency drives with active front ends.
The two frequency drives are cooled by a single water-cool unit in order to save weight, space and costs.
Bakker Sliedrecht assembled the electrical drive systems in the company’s workshop as part of the arrangement.

One of the segments of the second PKR was also constructed at the shipyard.
Furthermore, Bakker Sliedrecht carried out an installation check on the finished ship segment following Damen’s installation of the electrical propulsion system on-board the vessel.
The segment of the vessel was subsequently transported to Indonesia, where all ship segments were connected together.
Each frequency drive is connected to the ship’s power grid in order without the use of a transformer in order to reduce both weight and space.
Bakker Sliedrecht has also developed new smart filter techniques to reduce the disturbance levels in order to comply with International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and navy regulations.
In addition, the company has integrated a selective earth fault detection system into the design.
The electrical auxiliary propulsion systems of both PKR frigates were delivered to the Indonesian Navy within schedule.
Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding previosuly delivered the first Sigma 10514 PKR frigate to the Indonesian Ministry of Defence in February.
