"The JSS contract delivered high levels of combat systems availability to the Royal Navy’s fleet and provided the MoD’s Maritime Combat Systems team with specialist support."

The JSS 2 programme is intended to ensure that the combat management systems, tactical networks and shared infrastructures installed on-board the vessels continue to deliver high performance.

It will also ensure maximum levels of equipment availability, as well as overcome obsolescence and enhance the combat systems’ reliability and flexibility.

The original JSS contract was signed in 2010.

The JSS programme offered mission-critical combat systems support, providing repairs, technology refreshes and spare parts, for the Royal Navy’s Type 23 frigates, landing platform dock (LPD), HMS Ocean, the RFA Argus and mine counter measure vessels (MCMVs).

JSS 2 will also extend similar support to the navy’s Type 45 destroyers and the Queen Elizabeth-class (QEC) aircraft carriers.

BAE Systems Naval Ships Combat Systems director Richard Williams said: “The JSS contract delivered high levels of combat systems availability to the Royal Navy’s fleet and provided the MoD’s Maritime Combat Systems team with specialist support.

“The new JSS 2 contract builds on that pedigree, for more platforms and equipment, and drives greater value from MoD’s investment in the Type 26 Global Combat Ship to achieve fleet-wide combat systems benefit and the Defence Equipment & Support Agency’s Combat Systems Coherence Strategy.”

The programme will include the integration of the UK MoD’s latest and advanced shared infrastructure onto the Type 45 and QEC vessels.

In addition, the shared infrastructure product line will facilitate the rapid assessment, trial and deployment of new and emerging capabilities, thereby accelerating the route to operational use, while minimising the installed hardware footprint and through-life costs.

The JSS 2 contract is worth approximately £200m and will continue until the end of March 2024.

It will see an investment of nearly £50m into 27 core suppliers across the country, including 14 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for hardware, software and logistical support.
