BAE Systems and Dell Technologies have partnered to provide a digital capability for the British Royal Navy’s new City-class Type 26 frigates.

The partnership is aimed at deploying a Shared Infrastructure to host the essential systems of the frigate.

These include a number provided by third parties on a single, reliable digital platform.

According to BAE Systems, the collaboration will take full advantage of ‘scalable, open, and coherent’ technology and provide improved durability, advanced security, and data protection.

The solution’s reduced footprint will also provide other environmental benefits.

BAE Systems Naval Ships Combat Systems director Amelia Gould said: “We’re delighted to continue our work with Dell Technologies. Our combined solutions provide the Digital Backbone to the Carrier Strike Group and Type 26.

“The collaboration reinforces our digital capability and provides mutual benefit by allowing us to have first-look access to the latest digital technologies and provides Dell with useful insights on complex uses for their solutions.”

The two companies’ approach is based on the implementation of a Shared Infrastructure solution across several front-line naval platforms, including the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers.

Dell Technologies UK senior vice-president and general manager Dayne Turbitt said: “Our collaborative development approach with BAE Systems on the next generation of world-class naval ships reflects the strength of our successful and long-standing relationship and reinforces our mission to provide a vital advantage in protecting what matters.

“Together we’re driving leading-edge, secure technology that can be deployed and integrated fast and delivered in the most demanding environments, ultimately supporting BAE customers to make faster and better decisions and improve defence outcomes.”

HMS Glasgow, which is the first ship in this class, is currently under construction on the Clyde in Glasgow.

BAE Systems was contracted in 2017 to deliver the first batch of Type 26s.

They will be the first three of eight vessels that will replace the Type 23 frigates currently in service.
