Notably, the number of cybersecurity-related patent applications in the aerospace, defence & security industry was 122 in Q4 2023, versus 132 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 30% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Thales filed the most cybersecurity patents within the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q4 2023. The company filed 12 cybersecurity-related patents in the quarter, compared with 8 in the previous quarter. It was followed by RTX with 9 cybersecurity patent filings, Electricite de France (7 filings), and Boeing (5 filings) in Q4 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 37% share of total patent filings

The largest share of cybersecurity related patent filings in the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q4 2023 was in the US with 37%, followed by China (11%) and France (10%). The share represented by the US was 6% lower than the 42% share it accounted for in Q3 2023.
