Schiebel and Diehl Defence have renewed an agreement to market the Camcopter S-100 unmanned helicopter to German Navy.

The Camcopter S-100 is a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) unmanned air system (UAS) that can be operated for an extensive time period, in all weather conditions.

With a range of 200km, the UAS can be operated both on land and at sea.

"The renewal of the teaming agreement is the result of the longstanding cooperation between Diehl Defence and Schiebel."

Pre-programmed GPS waypoints allow the S-100 to navigate automatically and the helicopter's missions are planned and controlled via a simple point-and-click graphical user interface, Schiebel said in a statement.

Diehl Defence board member Helmut Rauch said: "The renewal of the teaming agreement is the result of the longstanding cooperation between Diehl Defence and Schiebel.

“We consider Schiebel a highly competent partner and believe the Camcopter S-100 is the best possible product for all remotely piloted aircraft operations of the German Navy.”

In 2008, Schiebel completed flight trials of the helicopter on-board the German Navy’s K130 class corvettes, Braunschweig and Magdeburg, in the Baltic Sea.

The tests involved more than 130 takeoffs and landings.

Diehl Defense has expertise in the integration of different defence systems and surveillance equipment into German Navy vessels, Schiebel said.

To date, the S-100 supported more than 30 different vessels on all the world's oceans.

The UAV employs 'fly-by-wire' technology, controlled by redundant flight computers, to conduct missions in the most complex of electromagnetic environments.
