Israel-based company Elbit Systems has carried out a live demonstration of a remotely operated anti-submarine warfare (ASW) mission using its multi-mission unmanned surface vessel (USV) known as Seagull.

The Seagull platform conducted the operational ASW mission in Haifa Bay, Israel, via satellite communication (SATCOM) using control consoles located approximately 3,515km away.

The multi-mission USV system used its dipping sonar and Elbit Systems’ proprietary software to carry out real-time detection and classification of objects in order to demonstrate Seagull’s capability to deter and dissuade hostile subsurface activity.

Two operators from the Seagull team were involved in the exercise, a USV operator and sonar operator.

Elbit Systems’ Seagull solution is a 12m-long USV that can be operated either from a mothership or on-shore stations.

The unmanned system offers a wide range of multi-mission capabilities such as ASW, mine-hunting and minesweeping (MCM) and electronic warfare (EW), as well as maritime security and underwater commercial missions.

"The unmanned system offers a wide range of multi-mission capabilities such as ASW, mine-hunting and minesweeping (MCM) and electronic warfare (EW)."

Seagull has a mission endurance of more than four days. The solution helps leverage modular mission system deployment and offers a high level of autonomy.

The USV is equipped with command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence (C4I) capabilities to ensure improved situation awareness.

It is also capable of conducting end-to-end mine-hunting operations, including detection, classification, location, identification and neutralisation of bottom, moored and drifting sea mines, while taking the crew out of the minefield.

The USV system previously carried out an autonomous end-to-end unmanned mine countermeasure (MCM) mission in June, which demonstrated the solution's real-time operational capabilities in the Belgian North Sea.
