A US Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) has carried out its routinely transit operations in the Taiwan Strait.
This was announced by the US Indo-Pacific Command (INSOPACOM) in a media statement released on 5 January.

The statement said that the warship operated only in that region where the ‘high-seas freedoms of navigation and overflight’ law applies and the entire operation was performed in compliance with the international laws.
“The ship transited through a corridor in the Strait that is beyond the territorial sea of any coastal State. Chung-Hoon’s transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the US’ commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific,” INDOPACOM’s statement read.
This Arleigh Burke-class destroyer is a part of the US Nimitz-class Carrier Strike Group, which is currently deployed to conduct operations in the Seventh Fleet area of operations.

By GlobalDataAccording to a report by Reuters, China’s embassy in Washington spokesperson Liu Pengyu has condemned Chung-Hoon’s operation, saying that the US should “immediately stop provoking troubles, escalating tensions and undermining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”
“China will continue to stay on high alert and is ready to respond to all threats and provocations at any time and will resolutely safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the statement said.
China’s People’s Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command spokesperson senior colonel Shi Yi has also released a written statement claiming that the activities of the US Navy warship were continuously being monitored by their forces.
“Troops of PLA Eastern Theater Command kept monitoring the vessel and maintained vigilance throughout the course. All movements of the US warship were under control,” Shi Yi’s statement added.
