The approximately $61.30m (NOK604m) contract has been awarded as part of the ongoing joint procurement initiative between Germany and Norway.

The defence cooperation talks between the two nations’ governments started in 2017 for the procurement of NSMs for the German and Norwegian navies.

It also included the provision for joint maintenance and logistics support for the delivered systems for the naval forces of the two countries.

A year later in June 2018, the two nations signed a cooperative agreement with Kongsberg for the procurement of missile systems, which marked the beginning of the initial phase of industrial cooperation between Norway and Germany.

Kongsberg’s NSM is a flexible and multi-mission precision long-range strike missile system that can be launched from different platforms against a wide range of land- and sea-based targets.

NSM has been designed to counter various emerging threats in highly contested and complex warfighting scenarios and offers high survivability against the enemy air defence systems.

The weapon system has stealth properties to precisely detect and deter enemy ships with least chances of causing unintentional damage.

It is currently in service with various Nato allied and partner countries’ naval forces, including Canada, Germany, the US, the UK and Norway.

Recently, Kongsberg secured a contract to provide NSM for the Royal Netherlands Navy’s air defence and command frigates fleet.
