An Australian Defence Vessel (ADV), named Reliant, has joined the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) fleet to support missions in the Pacific area of operations.

A flag raising ceremony was also conducted at Brisbane International Cruise Terminal, which is also the vessel’s homeport.

This offshore-capable vessel will be deployed to address requests and requirements of Australia’s Pacific partners during high-risk weather season this year.

Reliant will also support humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.

The missions undertaken by Reliant will be managed by Australian Department of Defence and informed by Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, in close consultation with Pacific Island partners.

Crew to be deployed with Reliant comprises of a permanent Navy liaison officer, multi-agency teams for deployment tasks and a total of 18 Australian merchant mariners, roped-in through defence industry partner TK Shipping Australia.

RAN chief vice admiral Mark Hammond said: “Australian Defence Vessel Reliant will spend up to 300 days a year in Pacific area of operations, ready to assist our Pacific family.

“The vessel has range to reach all corners of Pacific. It can circumnavigate globe without refuelling.

“This highly adaptable ship will deploy with specialist multi-agency teams of personnel and can be used for a range of purposes in concert with Pacific family, including marine survey, delivering heavy equipment, search and rescue training and disaster relief and recovery.”

Capable of producing thousands of litres of fresh water every day, ADV Reliant has a large cargo deck.

This 102m-long vessel, formerly called MV Reliant, is the latest addition to Australia’s National Support Squadron, responsible for providing various services to the RAN fleet.

Other vessels in the squadron are MV Mercator, Stoker Sycamore, Besant and ADV Ocean Protector.
