The Australian Department of Defence (DoD) has started rollout of the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) new maritime multi-patterned uniform (MMPU) in Sydney.
Designed and manufactured in Australia, the initial distribution of the RAN’s uniforms started in October 2021 from Darwin and Cairns in Australia.

Further the forces assigned in the Western Australia region have also received the MMPU earlier this year.
The rollout of uniforms across all the RAN units is expected to complete by the end of this year.
RAN Logistics director-general commodore Nathan Robb said: “By listening to our people and working with industry, the uniform delivered is more lightweight, fit for Navy purpose and suitable for the range of conditions and environments our Navy operates in.”
A joint effort of Australian DoD and industry partners, the new uniforms are developed to provide benefit to the RAN’s personnel deployed at the sea as well as on the shore.

By GlobalDataThe industry partners associated with the manufacturing of Navy’s uniform include Australia by Australian Defence Apparel (ADA), Workwear Group, Melbourne and Bruck Textiles Group in Wangaratta, Victoria.
Bruck Textiles manufactured the fabric, which was used by ADA and Workwear Group to manufacture individual uniforms at their facility in Bendigo and Melbourne, Victoria.
Bruck Textiles Group general manager Vineet Dhawan said: “We are very proud to have produced this new, innovative, lightweight solution, which has made the shirt 25 percent lighter, the trousers 15 percent lighter, and has incorporated the fire-retardant properties within the fabric, not in addition to the fabric.”
“Being involved in this great project helps keep both industry and the capability sustainable.”
MMPU is a lightweight uniform, and its fabric incorporates latest solutions such fire-retardant properties and antistatic properties. The fabric properties are maintained even after laundering and exposure to sea water.
