It is the first fully indigenously developed anti-drone system to be inducted by the Indian Navy.

In a press statement, the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) stated that the Indian Navy has been constantly providing support towards the joint development of the NADS system.

Multiple units of BEL and DRDO Labs were involved in the development of this system under India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The NADS system is capable of instantly identifying and jamming micro drones and uses a laser-based kill mechanism against targets.

To detect and jam micro drones, NADS employs radar, electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensors and radio frequency (RF) detectors.

According to the MoD, the system can efficiently counter the increased drone threat to key naval installations and offers 360° coverage.

This anti-drone technology system provides the Indian Armed Forces with both ‘soft kill’ and ‘hard kill’ options to handle evolving aerial threats.

With this signing, NADS’ static and mobile versions will be delivered to the service.

In September 2018, BEL secured a Rs92bn ($1.28bn) order to deliver seven long-range surface-to-air missile (LRSAM) systems for use by the Indian Navy.
