The Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has awarded a contract for the delivery and installation of new radars for the German Navy.

Under the order, valued at approximately $235m (€200m), Hensoldt, alongside Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), will deliver four long-range radars. It includes radar and the identification, friend or foe (IFF) system, respectively.

The systems will be installed on the German F124 Sachsen-Class air defence frigates.

The latest order will see the F124 frigate’s radars refurbished to overcome the obsolescence of electronics components.

It also marks the beginning of the development of national capabilities in the Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) field.

Hensoldt noted that the order includes a shore facility that is a fully functional copy of the F124 frigate’s radars.

It allows training for users and service technicians, while enabling further developments to be tested on land before onboard installation.

For this purpose, Hensoldt has signed a strategic cooperation agreement in the field of BMD-capable wide-range radars in S-band with IAI subsidiary ELTA Systems.

In December last year, IAI subsidiary ELTA Systems and Hensoldt signed an agreement to jointly produce radar systems for ballistic missile defence.

Under this joint strategic cooperation agreement, the two companies will also partner on projects covering air and space surveillance.

Hensoldt supplies advanced radar systems to the German Navy that are used on the K130 corvettes and F125 frigates.
