GE Marine and TUSAS Engine Industries (TEI) have entered a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore further localisation of GE’s gas turbines in Turkey.
The two companies will seek to boost local manufacturing, assembly and repair capabilities of GE’s LM2500 family and LM500 gas turbines.

Additionally, the MoU includes provisions to identify opportunities that will enable the addition of TEI into various design processes for potential naval programmes.
The LM2500 marine gas turbine is a two-shaft, high-performance engine used by 33 navies worldwide, including the Turkish Naval Forces.
Turkey’s MILGEM multi-purpose corvettes are powered by a GE LM2500 and two diesel engines.
The other gas turbine, LM500, is similar in design to GE’s LM2500 and is suitable for lightweight marine applications. The LM500 is ideal for patrol boats and hydrofoils.

By GlobalDataTEI president and CEO Mahmut Faruk Akşit said: “Since 1985, with its partner GE, TEI has been a major player in the defence and aerospace industries by manufacturing high quality aero engine components, rendering preeminent in-service support for military and commercial engines, and producing and servicing its indigenous engines not only for national needs but also global OEMs and end-users.
“With this signed MoU, TEI will have the opportunity to become an approved and certified OEM service provider to Turkey’s marine engines and exported fleet of LM2500 family and LM500 gas turbines.
Last year, GE Marine was contracted by Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) for four LM2500 marine gas turbines. The engines will be installed on Finnish Navy’s new Pohjanmaa-class corvettes.
