The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced the development of a new technology to protect naval vessels against missile attacks.

The new Advanced Chaff Technology has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) laboratory, Defence Laboratory Jodhpur (DLJ). It meets the Indian Navy’s ‘qualitative requirements’.

Chaff is a passive expendable electronic countermeasure technology employed to safeguard naval ships from enemy’s radar and radio frequency (RF) missile seekers.

The MoD said in a statement: “The importance of this development lies in the fact that very less quantity of chaff material deployed in the air acts as decoy to deflect enemy’s missiles for safety of the ships.

“The DRDO has gained the expertise to meet the futuristic threats from adversaries. The technology is being given to the industry for production in large quantities.”

The Chaff technology has been developed in three variants, namely the Short Range Chaff Rocket (SRCR), Medium Range Chaff Rocket (MRCR), and Long Range Chaff Rocket (LRCR).

The roll out of the new technology to industry for bulk production is a major step towards India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.

The clearance for manufacture in large quantities follows successful testing of all three variants in the Arabian Sea on an undisclosed Indian Naval Ship.

Last month, the Indian Navy officially inducted its new nuclear missile tracking vessel following a delivery delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
