Kongsberg Maritime has been contracted for the delivery of propeller systems for the Spanish Navy’s F110 frigates.

The contract is valued at NOK200m ($22.05m) and awarded by Spanish shipbuilder Navantia.

In April last year, Navantia signed a contract for the construction of five F110s. The new ships will be built at the company’s Ferrol shipyard in Spain.

The next-generation F110 frigates are a follow-on from the F100 frigate of Navantia.

Kongsberg Maritime president Egil Haugsdal said: “We are very pleased to be working with Navantia on this project.

Kongsberg will supply propulsion systems that adhere to the stringent specifications. The company has its own Kongsberg Maritime Research Centre (KHRC) in Kristinehamn, Sweden.

The centre is known for its research in in hydrodynamics and advanced designs to reduce propeller noise.

In July this year, Indra was contracted to integrate advanced sensors on the Spanish Navy’s F110 class frigates.

The company signed multiple contracts with Navantia worth more than €150m ($169m).

In December last year, Thales was selected to provide an integrated sonar suite for the Spanish Navy’s F110 multi-mission frigates.

Navantia and Spain’s General Directorate for Armament and Material (DGAM) awarded a contract to Thales to provide sonars and acoustic systems for the frigates.
