BAE Systems has won a contract worth $103.5m from the US Navy to maintain and upgrade the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Preble (DDG 88).

As per the depot maintenance period (DMP) availability contract, BAE Systems will dry dock the vessel, carry out work for underwater hull preservation, and modernise the Aegis combat system and its command and control equipment.

It will also renovate the living spaces for the 280 crew members on the ship.

The work is expected to start in October and will be completed in February 2022.

The BAE Systems’ shipyard in San Diego is carrying out similar work on the Launch missile destroyer USS Shoup (DDG 86).

The USS Preble is the 38th Arleigh Burke-class ship that entered service in June 2002. It was named after the hero of the US Navy in the early 19th century, Commander Edward Comble.

BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair vice-president and general manager David Thomas Jr said: “The depot maintenance availability BAE Systems will perform aboard USS Preble is complex and critical.

“Our team of employees, subcontractors and navy personnel have a great deal of experience with the DDG class and look forward to ushering the USS Preble into its next phase of fleet readiness.”

Last week, BAE Systems received a contract from the US Marine Corps (USMC) to develop a design prototype for a new Wargaming Center at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia.
