Last month, US Navy awarded a $34.99m contract to L3Harris for a single MUSV prototype.

The initial $35m award is part of a $281m programme that comprises prototypes and options for nine total MUSVs.

L3Harris will integrate its ASView autonomous technology into a dedicated 195ft utility vehicle from its Gulf Coast plant in Louisiana.

MUSV will offer the fleet intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, while automatically manoeuvring and conforming with international collision regulations, even in an operational environment.

L3Harris will become a systems integrator and deliver mission autonomy and perception technology as the programme’s prime contractor.

The design team includes Gibbs & Cox and Incat Crowther. They will provide the design of the ship and Swiftships will construct the vehicle.

L3Harris Integrated Mission Systems president Sean Stackley said: “The MUSV programme award reinforces our investments in the unmanned market and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to bring mission-critical capabilities to our warfighters.

“L3Harris is continuing to develop a full range of highly reliable and affordable autonomous maritime capabilities to enable distributed maritime operations in support of the National Defense Strategy.”

In May, Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) secured a contract from the US NAVSEA to provide products and services within the unmanned surface vehicle (USV) family of systems (FOS).
