Safran Electronics & Defense Australasia has been awarded a subcontract to design combat system components for the Royal Australian Navy’s future class of submarines.
The contract was awarded by Lockheed Martin Australia and requires Safran to design three major combat system components for the future submarine programme.

Under the A$36.77m ($24.8m) contract, the company will provide the preliminary designs for optronics search and attack mast, navigation radar and navigation data distribution subsystems.
The contract will run until May 2023. Safran will also deliver prototypes and interface simulators under the contract.
Lockheed Martin Australia is the combat system integrator for the future Attack-class submarines.
The contract will support Lockheed Martin’s efforts to undertake further tests and evaluate the integrated performance of the combat system at its Combat System Architecture Laboratory in Adelaide.

Safran will also establish capabilities at its new facility in Botany, New South Wales, to enable the build, integration and ongoing sustainment of the combat system components.
The company will award subcontracts to Acacia Systems and Thomas Global Systems to support the contract. The two Australian firms will design and develop software and hardware, respectively.
