The US Navy has awarded BAE Systems a $41.8m contract to perform regular maintenance and upgrades of its San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship, USS Anchorage (LPD 23).
The cumulative value of the contract will reach $48.4m if all options are exercised.

BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair vice-president and general manager David M Thomas Jr said: “Our team looks forward to working with the Navy and our repair partners to perform important upgrades that ensure the Anchorage remains a very capable amphibious combatant ship.”
The company will install the upgraded electronic systems and carry out other restorative works.
Repair work on the 684ft-long USS Anchorage will begin in July and is expected to take a year to complete.
Restorative work on USS Anchorage will be carried out at BAE Systems’ San Diego shipyard over 12 months. The company has nearly 1,300 employees at the shipyard.

Commissioned in May 2013, the USS Anchorage is the second US Navy ship to be named after the Alaskan city.
USS Anchorage is the seventh San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock and is a part of Essex Amphibious Ready Group (ARG).
The 24,900t dock ship is capable of accommodating a landing force of up to 800 marines and is designed to provide improved combat capabilities.
It was built by Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) and delivered to the US Navy in September 2012.
Earlier this month, BAE Systems received a contract from the US Navy to provide additional advanced precision kill weapon system precision guidance kits.
