The Australian Department of Defence (DoD) has awarded a contract to Lendlease Building for the second stage of the critical infrastructure works at the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) Garden Island naval base in Sydney.
The contract will be delivered under the A$286m ($202.91m) stage II of the Critical Infrastructure Recovery Program (CIRP).

The objective of the CIRP is to address the significant condition, capacity and compliance issues with Garden Island’s existing wharves and engineering services.
During the first stage of the programme, the government invested A$213m ($151.12m) in works at the base in 2017.
Australia Assistant Minister for Defence David Fawcett said: “The works represent the Government’s significant investment in Garden Island as the primary home port for Navy ships on the east coast.
“This investment follows previous funding of A$213m for Stage I in 2017, with wharf infrastructure works already underway to ensure Navy can continue to secure our region and conduct disaster relief.”

By GlobalDataLendlease is expected to begin construction works in May this year, with completion expected in 2023.
Fawcett noted that the construction phase will provide around 2,500 direct and indirect jobs.
The CIRP programme involves two stages. During the first stage, the existing Cruiser and Oil wharves will be demolished and a new wharf will be built. Stage I also includes the installation of a new crane, engineering services and wharf furniture.
Work for the first stage will be carried out in two phases to allow the RAN to use part of the wharf.
The second stage will involve remediating the remaining wharves, as well as base-wide engineering services.
