The US Navy’s newest class of guided-missile destroyer USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) has left its homeport in San Diego for its first operational period at sea.
The vessel will sail up the West Coast to a naval base in Canada, USNI News reported.

In a statement, the US 3rd Fleet said that the new vessel demonstrates the navy’s commitment to advancing capabilities of its surface combatants by integrating technologies in Zumwalt’s combat systems, weapons, and engineering plants.
USS Zumwalt commanding officer captain Andrew Carlson said: “Zumwalt is designed for stealth. This aids her role as a multi-mission surface combatant and improves the fleet commander’s options for delivery of naval combat power to meet the navy’s emergent mission requirements.”
Measuring 610ft, Zumwalt is 100ft longer and 13ft wider than the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. This allows the vessel to perform a wider array of surface, submarine, and aviation missions.
The ‘at-sea’ deployment comes after the vessel’s crew recently completed a post-delivery maintenance availability to carry out a thorough evaluation of the ship’s systems and equipment, including radars and an engineering plant.
