Babcock International has received a contract from the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) to provide configuration management services for the British Royal Navy and the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) surface ship fleet.
The company will deliver the contract work in collaboration with Allan Webb, which will provide specialist data interrogation skills.

Under the four-year contract, which includes potential extensions, Babcock is responsible for the surface ship definition database (SSDD), a tool used for the management of platform related data.
Operation of the Master Record Data Centre (MRDC Ships) is expected to cover activities, such as equipment ship fit configuration; ship datum document configuration; and defect report management via the surface ship equipment data record.
MRDC Ships serves as the core facility for ship information configuration services and the work will ensure the availability of necessary systems and equipment as and when they are required.

Over the course of the Royal Navy configuration management contract, Babcock will embed and upgrade existing data management systems to aid through-life support programmes.
This is anticipated to deliver tangible benefits on existing programmes and new builds, including the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers.
Babcock will use its data centre near Bristol to host the specialist applications.
