BAE Systems has unveiled advanced technology solutions to modernise and enhance the capability of future combat systems installed on naval ships.
A total of £20m has been invested to develop augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) for future application to the critical systems that provide combat capability to the navy vessels.

The company said that the technological advancements will enable naval personnel to enhance their decision making in the future battlespace. This will enable them to quickly respond to growing threats.
Innovations will be specifically designed to enable the combat systems installed onboard navy ships to be easily updated.
The upgraded systems will help maintain operational effectiveness for several years and decrease through-life support costs.

A part of the £20m investment will be spent on the integration of the AR into the bridges of the naval vessels.
The use of products such as wearable AR glasses will allow an Officer of the Watch to take control of situations with increased effectiveness without having to depend on a console or clarifications from the crew.
Additionally, the company has introduced ‘open systems’ architecture with an aim to enhance the Shared Infrastructure technology being developed on behalf of the UK Royal Navy.
The open architecture system will allow crew members to deploy new capabilities, thereby increasing their flexibility and ability to respond to evolving threats in the future battlespace environment.
BAE engineers are also incorporating AI aids into combat systems, which enable the users to quickly process information and fast combat-related decision-making.
