Danish defence and aerospace manufacturer Terma is set to deliver its Scanter 6002 radar for installation on-board the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) fleet of new offshore patrol vessels (OPVs).
Terma Singapore originally signed a contract with Saab Australia in May for the delivery of SEA1180 OPVs to the RAN.

The company has been contracted to provide Scanter 6002 radars for the entire fleet of 12 OPVs over a ten-year period as part of the SEA1180 OPV delivery project.
The vessels have been designed by German shipyard Lürssen and will be used to replace and upgrade the current capabilities provided by the navy’s existing Armidale-class patrol boats.
RAN’s new patrol vessels will be used to carry out a variety of constabulary missions upon deployment, along with a wide range of maritime patrol and response duties.
Terma’s Scanter 6002 radar is a combined air and surface surveillance system that offers enhanced capabilities for advanced navigation, and air and surface surveillance, as well as helicopter control.

Scanter 6002 radars allow the operator to detect surface and short-range air contacts, while providing the capability to track and control any air vehicles operating in close proximity to the navy vessels.
The radar’s surface surveillance capability also features superior small-target detection and target-separation abilities, even in adverse weather conditions.
Terma and India-based company Tata Advanced Systems (TASL) previously secured a contract in November last year for the delivery of 31 units of its Scanter 6002 radar in support of the Indian Navy’s surface surveillance radar (SSR) project.
