Italian firm Leonardo has entered collaborations with L3 Technologies and Ultra Electronics Command & Sonar Systems (Ultra) to provide a complete acoustic sensor system for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) operations.

The partnerships with L3 and Ultra have been formed separately and the next-generation acoustic sensor system is expected to be based on Leonardo’s new lightweight Ultra-LIght SonicS Enhanced System (ULISSES) processor.

Leonardo’s new system will comprise ULISSES and either a dipping sonar provided by L3 or sonobuoys provided by Ultra, or a combination of both solutions.

The integrated acoustic system, along with the partnered approach, will allow the company to market the product to a range of international users.

The acoustic sensor will be tested later this year and the complete system is expected to be available for deliveries in 2020.

Its processor will be capable of collecting information from multiple sonobuoys and combining the data to develop an in-depth picture of the under-sea environment.

Ultra’s multi-static functionality is set to be integrated into the ULISSES sonobuoy processor under the initiative.

The ULISSES system is able to improve its multi-static performance with the use of L3’s very-low-frequency helicopter long-range active sonar (HELRAS) dipping system as an active source.

Leonardo noted that ULISSES can also be installed on-board very small unmanned platforms such as its SD-150 Hero rotary-wing aircraft.
