The Australian Department of Defence and the Indigenous Affairs Ministry have launched the new Bayinguwa Delivery Team joint venture (JV) between Pacific Services Group Holdings (PSG Holdings) and Lendlease Engineering.

The JV has been launched to carry out the A$213m ($157.15m) Bayinguwa critical wharf works project at the Garden Island Defence Precinct, the Royal Australian Naval Base in Sydney.

Australian Department of Defence Minister Marise Payne said: “The engagement of the Bayinguwa Delivery Team is first and foremost about delivering high-quality works for Garden Island.

“These works are essential to ensure the RAN can safely berth and maintain its ships at Garden Island, which is the major home-port on the east coast of Australia.”

“The Garden Island Bayinguwa Delivery Team will be responsible for managing the demolition of two deteriorated wharves and constructing a single new wharf in their place.

“These works are essential to ensure the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) can safely berth and maintain its ships at Garden Island, which is the major home-port on the east coast of Australia.”

The Bayinguwa wharf project is expected to generate up to 150 job opportunities at the peak of its construction, which is scheduled to begin in September and expected to be completed in February 2022.

Separately, Australian company Taylor Bros Marine has signed a A$3.6bn ($2.65bn) major contract with Luerssen Australia to design, manufacture and install accommodation spaces on the 12 offshore patrol vessels to be built for the RAN.

Another local company, Thales Australia has signed a MoU with the University of Tasmania, Australian Maritime College, and AMOG Consulting to evaluate the possibilities for the development of a new trial and test facility for submarine and surface ship sonar systems in Tasmania.
