The US Navy’s Emory S. Land-class submarine tender USS Frank Cable (AS 40) has completed its $56m planned, dry-dock repair availability in Portland, Oregon.
US-based shipbuilding company Vigor Industrial was responsible for carrying out the project, which included improvements, maintenance, steel renewal and equipment repairs.

The availability was intended to help return the approximately 40-year-old vessel to its designed, mission capabilities.
Military Sealift Command (MSC) Ship master captain Patrick Christian said: “The navy and MSC crew worked very hard during this shipyard period to maximise repairs and material conditions.
“Now we are ready to re-join the fleet and get back on our mission.”
USS Frank Cable has spent more than eight months in Portland, where it underwent a main reduction gear foundation repair and shafting, as well as a collection holding tank replacement.

USS Frank Cable commanding officer US Navy captain Jeff Farah said: “MSC and what they bring is vital to our mission.
“Our mission can take place in-port, forward deployed, through fly-away teams or on land.
“MSC gives us the flexibility to deploy at a moment’s notice.”
Repair sailors in Guam, who were temporarily assigned to AS 40’s sister submarine tender USS Emory S. Land (AS 39), are slated to re-join the underway crew upon the vessel’s return to its home port.
The two-tender concept will see the crew members of the two sister ships work together to repair, re-supply and re-arm submarines and surface vessels forward deployed to the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
USS Frank Cable arrived at its working port in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in March last year to prepare for the scheduled dry-dock maintenance availability in Oregon.
