General Dynamics (GD) Electric Boat has secured a $432.03m contract modification to carry out work on the US Navy’s Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarines.

Under the terms of the deal, the company will conduct research and development studies and design efforts for the vessels.

GD Electric Boat will deliver lead yard services that will help maintain, update and support the Virginia-class design and related drawings, along with the data for each vessel.

The services will also include the installation of new technologies and the Virginia Payload Module throughout the vessel’s construction and post-shakedown availability period.

The company will conduct development studies and design efforts related to components and systems in order to accomplish research and development tasks, as well as prototypes and engineering development models necessary to evaluate the latest technologies.

The scope of the works include the submarine’s design and design improvements, preliminary and detail component and system design, integration of system engineering, design engineering, test engineering, logistics engineering, and production engineering.
