Naval Group said the handover marks a key milestone in Greece’s FDI programme, which it dates to 2022.

It also comes after the delivery of the first Greek FDI, HS Kimon, in December 2025, with a third ship, HS Formion, scheduled for delivery by the end of 2026.

In November last year Greece’s General Directorate of Defense Investments and Armaments (GDDIA) and Naval Group signed a contract for a fourth FDI for the Hellenic Navy.

Naval Group chairman and CEO Pierre Éric Pommellet said: “Only ten months after the delivery of HS Kimon, it is an honour to deliver the second FDI frigate for the Hellenic Navy, HS Nearchos.”

According to Naval Group, more than 75 Greek companies are involved in its FDI frigate and submarine programmes, contributing work ranging from the supply of electronic maps produced in Greece to the manufacture of pre-armed blocks, as well as mechanical and electronic systems.

The Hellenic Navy has also contracted the company for the initial in-service support for the FDI frigates.

In addition, maintenance and upgrade work will be carried out in cooperation with its Greek subsidiary, Naval Group Hellas, alongside Greek industrial partners.

The FDI are surface combatants being built for the Hellenic Navy. The vessel is about 122m long and 18m wide, with a displacement of 4,500t and a maximum speed of 27 knots.

The also feature aviation facilities designed to support a 10-tonne-class helicopter and a vertical take-off and landing uncrewed aerial vehicle.
