General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB) has received three undefinitised orders worth a combined total of nearly $240m for Virginia-class submarines.
According to contract details released by the US Department of War (DoW), all work will take place at the company’s Groton, Connecticut facility and is scheduled for completion by March 2029.

The first contract, valued at up to $99.3m, is funded from the Navy’s fiscal 2025 other procurement budget. The second contract, worth up to $79.5m, is funded from fiscal 2024 procurement accounts, while the third, not to exceed $60.7m, is also sourced from fiscal 2025 funding.
For the two contracts drawing on 2025 accounts, the funds were fully obligated at the time of award and will remain available beyond the end of the fiscal year.
In contrast, funds for the fiscal 2024 contract will expire with the close of the current fiscal year.
According to DoW, all the three contracts cover the supply of unique parts and specialised material, including initial spares, for Virginia-class submarines.
The Naval Sea Systems Command is overseeing the contracting activity. None of the orders were competitively procured.
Each agreement was made under the provisions of 10 U.S. Code 3204(a)(1), which allows for non-competitive awards when only one responsible source can satisfy agency requirements.
The contract notifications do not specify the individual components included or their delivery schedule beyond the 2029 deadline.
These contracts came after GDEB, a business unit of General Dynamics, received a $2.31bn contract modification to supply long lead time materials and commence initial manufacturing work for Virginia–class Block VI submarines in May this year.
Jointly built by GDEB and HII- Newport News Shipbuilding, the Virginia-class is a nuclear-powered attack submarine designed for both deep ocean anti-submarine warfare and littoral operations.
Each submarine in this class displaces approximately 7,800 tons, measures 377ft in length, and has a beam of 34ft.
The vessels are equipped with reactor plants intended to operate for the planned service life of the submarine without requiring refuelling, which is expected to reduce life-cycle costs and increase operational availability.
The US Navy has commissioned 26 Virginia-class fast-attack submarines to date.
The latest in the series, USS Idaho (SSN 799), was commissioned during a ceremony held at Naval Submarine Base New London in Connecticut on 25 April 2026.
