BAE Systems has been awarded a $149.8m firm-fixed-price contract by the US Navy to undertake maintenance and modernisation work on the USS Boxer (LHD 4).
The contract, designated as a Selected Restricted Availability (SRA), was initially announced by the US Department of War (DoW) on 11 August 2026.

It includes major upgrades, repairs, and routine maintenance of the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship while docked at Naval Base San Diego during the 2027 fiscal year.
According to DoW, the contracted scope encompasses all necessary labour, supervision, equipment, production, testing, and quality assurance to prepare the ship for future operations as mandated by the Chief of Naval Operations.
The deal also includes a series of optional add-ons which, if exercised, would increase the total value of the contract to just over $180m.
The work is scheduled to continue through to October 2028 in San Diego, California.

The new contract for repair and modernisation of the USS Boxer follows unscheduled repairs carried out in San Diego in 2024, which addressed issues with the ship’s starboard rudder and roller bearings.
Commissioned in 1995, the USS Boxer is the sixth ship in the Wasp-class of large deck, multi-purpose amphibious assault ships.
The Wasp-class amphibious assault ships deploy and support Marine Expeditionary Units using aircraft such as MH-60S Seahawks, MV-22 Ospreys, CH-53E Super Stallions, F-35B jets, and attack helicopters. The vessel also includes a well deck for Their well deck to accommodate landing craft including air cushion and utility variants.
The USS Boxer measures 844ft in length and 106ft in beam, with a displacement of 40,500 tons. It is capable of speeds exceeding 20 knots and accommodates a crew of 1,174 along with up to 2,070 embarked troops.
Earlier this month, the USS Boxer conducted a replenishment-at-sea operation with the USNS Arctic (T-AOE 8) while deployed in the US 5th Fleet area, supporting maritime security in the Middle East.
