HII has entered into a partnership with engineering and test company Nominal to update how data is collected, validated, and analysed for its REMUS autonomous underwater vehicles (UUVs) and ROMULUS uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs).

The initiative targets the full spectrum of digital-twin test and mission data.

Under this agreement, the two organisations will introduce standardised workflows designed to improve access to product data at both component and vehicle levels.

The partnership also seeks to speed up post-mission vehicle analysis and enable enhanced tracking and analysis of historical information throughout all stages of assembly and testing.

The REMUS platforms are currently operated by more than 30 naval forces internationally, including 14 Nato countries, to support activities such as mine countermeasures, undersea surveys, intelligence collection, and environmental monitoring.

By pairing the ROMULUS USV with the existing REMUS UUVs, users can address anti-submarine warfare sensing requirements while maintaining the safety of manned vessels at greater distances.

These capabilities combine to offer an integrated approach across surface and subsurface operations.

This collaboration follows a pilot project completed in 2025, where HII and Nominal reduced the duration of certain workflow cycles.

According to the results, some data analysis tasks were shortened from hours to minutes using automated templates, while certain production testing steps were completed in nearly half the time through improved data capture methods on the test floor.

HII maritime systems and corporate strategy executive vice president Eric Chewning said: “The REMUS UUV is a proven, globally deployed platform, and our partnership with Nominal strengthens how we scale and evolve it while accelerating the development of the ROMULUS USV family.

“By standardising how we collect and analyse test data, we are shortening feedback loops, improving traceability, and moving faster from testing to delivery — advancing maritime autonomy at a time when it is critical to the security of the US and our allies.”

Looking ahead to 2026, HII plans to extend use of Nominal’s tools throughout its product lifecycle management systems in order to support greater production volumes for both REMUS and ROMULUS vehicles.

The joint effort will focus on giving engineering, testing, and quality teams unified methods for gathering, validating, and interpreting data.

In January this year, HII completed the shipboard deployment and retrieval of a REMUS UUV using its automated Sea Launcher system.
