The milestone signals a key step in Türkiye’s first naval ship export project to an EU and Nato member nation, following the contract signing in Lisbon on 17 December 2024.

As per the contract, STM will be the main contractor for the design and construction of two Auxiliary Oiler Replenisher and Logistics Ships.

The first vessel will be named Luís de Camões, after Portugal’s national poet.

STM general manager Özgür Güleryüz said: “Today, we are honoured to begin the construction of the logistics support ships designed in Türkiye and tailored to the operational requirements of the Portuguese Navy. Luís de Camões, the national poet of Portugal, symbolises the deep maritime spirit of your nation. We are honoured to build a ship that carries his name and legacy.”

STM will oversee the construction of both the auxiliary oiler replenisher and logistics ships which are designed to provide extensive logistical support at sea, including fuel and cargo transfer, as well as transport of armoured vehicles.

The vessels’ modular design allows them to play multiple roles beyond logistics support, such as humanitarian assistance, search and rescue operations, medical missions during emergencies, and support for amphibious operations.

Each ship will include a stern ro-ro ramp capable of carrying as many as 20 light tactical armoured vehicles.

An integrated communication system will be installed to enable command and control functions, supporting effective fleet coordination.

Technical details specify that the vessel will be 137 metres (m) long, with a displacement exceeding 11,000 tonnes (t) and a maximum speed above 18 knots using diesel propulsion.

It can operate at sea for up to 90 days without resupply and offers accommodation for up to 100 personnel. Its operational range extends beyond 14,000 nautical miles at cruising speed.

The ship will feature systems designed for air defence and general warfare operations, including close-in weapon systems, remote-controlled 12.7mm weapons, chaff and decoy defences, and advanced sensors.

Cargo capacity consists of storage for F-76 and F-44 fuel, fresh water, general cargo, ammunition, and space for six 20 foot containers.

The vessel is equipped to perform command and control functions while supplying both solid and liquid cargo during peace or wartime fleet support tasks.

In October 2024, Damen Shipyards Group held the joint steel cutting and keel laying ceremony for the NRP Dom João II, classified as a Multi-Purpose Ship, and designed for the Portuguese Navy.
