The US Navy’s F/A-18C Hornet fighter jets have conducted their last flight after serving as a supersonic fighter for more than 30 years.
Conducted by the Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 113 and piloted by lieutenant commander Kristen Hansen, the F/A-18C will be replaced with $57m variant F/A-18E Super Hornet in March.
VFA 113 commanding officer commander Eric Doyle said: "The legacy F/A-18 has served the navy brilliantly as a supersonic fighter for over 30 years.
"While we remain proud of all the good work we have done with the F/A-18C, we are excited to begin transitioning to some brand new F/A-18E super hornets."
VFA-113, which completed the transition from the A-7E Corsair II to the F/A-18A Hornet on 14 December 1983, was the navy’s first fleet operational combat-ready strike fighter squadron,
VFA-113 received the upgraded F/A-18C hornet in 1989.
In August 2014, the F/A-18C flew combat missions aboard the USS Carl Vinson in support of Operation Inherent Resolve against ISIS in Iraq and Syria.
The Hornet jets are powered by two afterburning thrust General Electric F404-GE-400 turbofans, and are manufactured by McDonnell Douglas.
