The US Navy has christened its future joint high-speed vessel (JHSV) as USNS Brunswick (JHSV 6), the sixth of ten such vessels that Austal is building for the navy.
The 338ft-long aluminum catamaran will have 20,000ft² open mission deck and a flight deck to support day and night launch and recovery operations.
US Navy secretary Ray Mabus said: "More than 4,000 American craftsmen have made this ship possible and the partnership they have with our uniformed men and women, our navy civilians, the shipbuilding industry as a whole, and the American people, is one of the great strengths of our system.
"Throughout its life, as it serves around the world, this ship will represent the American spirit of hard work and patriotism the people of Brunswick exude."
The JHSVs are designed for fast, intra-theatre transportation of troops, military vehicles, supplies and equipment.
These vessels will be able to transport 600 short tons 1,200nm at an average speed of 35k, with berthing space for up to 104 personnel, and airline-style seating for up to 312.

In addition, the vessels will have a capacity to support overseas contingency operations, conduct humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, support special operations forces and emerging joint sea-basing concepts.
Australian shipbuilder Austal is constructing these vessels under a $1.6bn contract from the US Navy.
The navy received its fifth ship, USNS Trenton (JHSV 5), from Austal after successfully completing acceptance trials.
