The US Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) has awarded a contract to Rockwell Collins to assist the government in building the required navigation performance-area navigation (RNP-RNAV) flight management system, based on the Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE) technical standard.
RNP-RNAV is a performance-based navigation (PBN) which enables an aircraft to fly a specific path between two 3D-defined points in space.
The contract will see Rockwell Collins demonstrate its FACE-aligned flight management system application on military representative mission computer hardware in multiple configurations.
The demonstration will display its portability of the capabilities and securing the government an access to the data deemed necessary to align with the future RNP RNAV requirements.
Rockwell Collins Airborne Solutions vice-president and general manager said: "Our open architecture flight management system software product is written for fast and affordable integration across a wide variety of avionics systems.
"Its RNP RNAV capability provides full civil airspace interoperability while ensuring timely and efficient mission planning and execution."
This RNP-RNAV application features commercial technologies, which are currently operational on both commercial and tactical aircraft.
The FACE Technical Standard, developed by the Rockwell Collins-founded FACE Consortium, was a result of the joint effort of the government and industry.
It emphasises an open avionics environment for all military airborne platform class and aims at creating reusable and interoperable software capabilities.
In July, the US Navy agreed upon a cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) with Rockwell Collins for the RNP-RNAV flight management system.
