ROTHR

Raytheon has received a $104m contract from the US Navy’s Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) to provide operations and maintenance services for the relocatable over-the-horizon radar (ROTHR) programme.

The new contract covers operations and maintenance at ROTHR’s six locations in Texas and Virginia, US, as well as Puerto Rico.

The 2,000 mile ROTHR is a long-range, land-based, wide-area surveillance system that tracks aircraft and surface ships within designated surveillance zones off the US coastline.

“Raytheon and ROTHR technology help to make the world a safer place.”

The high-frequency radar system can provide coverage of more than 2.5 million square miles with a low operational cost.

Surface and air traffic data provided by the ROTHR are reported in real-time to the US tactical forces, who assume the responsibility for defending locations of national interest.

The wide-area radar capability also lends its support in tactical, strategic and intelligence missions for homeland defence.

Raytheon Intelligence, Information and Services (IIS) president Dave Wajsgras said: "Raytheon and ROTHR technology help to make the world a safer place.

"Our team will work closely with the US Navy’s Forces Surveillance Support Center and the Joint Interagency Task Force South, tracking hundreds of illegal activities every year that threaten to enter our borders."

ROTHR is deployed as the primary long-range air detection system for the Join Interagency Task Force South (JIATF-S), which coordinates the detection and combating of illicit trafficking and other narco-terrorist threats to US national security.

ROTHR operations have seized 4.5 metric tonnes of cocaine, valued at approximately $90m.
