The programme, termed as Submarine Deliberately Differentiated Package, is said to be a new approach to cater to the RAN’s work-force requirements.
The package is comprises of seven components, of which two are dedicated to the financial prospect, and the other three for the non-financial prospects to be offered to the eligible submarine personnel who contribute to the submarine capability.
Navy Workforce Management (Warfare) assistant director commander Guy Blackburn said: "It addresses the financial considerations as well as the wider professional, career and social issues that submariners indicated are affecting their intention to serve in the submarine capability and wider navy."
The programme is deemed as an ‘immediate and enduring measure’ to help tackle attrition of the submariners as well as boosting the manpower, aligned to the RAN submarine’s commitment to "strategic deterrence, lethality, availability and sustainability"."
Described as a first-of-its-type by the Australian Defence Force, the programme will develop a model to project the navy’s approach to tackle work-force challenges in other areas by conducting an in-depth research of the things that motivates people.
This is expected to help the work-force to continue with their area of employment and then to boost conditions, which allows personnel retention.
In June 2009, the RAN aimed to provide a glimpse of life in submarine to potential recruits, with the help of a high-tech recruiting tool.
