The Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA Naval Systems) has awarded a Nkr220m ($27.4m) contract to Kongsberg Defence Systems for upgrading part of the main weapon system of ULA-class submarines.
The contract will be delivered for a period of four years.
In past years, Kongsberg has supplied combat systems to the ULA-class submarines and also conducted several upgrade programmes.
The present contract includes electronics and functionality for handling submarines torpedoes.
The upgrade programme will contribute to keeping ULA-class submarines operational until the new generation of submarines are in place.
Kongsberg Defence Systems president Eirik Lie said: “Kongsberg is pleased to be part of the update programme ensuring the ULA-class operational capability until the new generation submarines arrives.”
The ULA class was assembled in Germany in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and is comprised of six vessels. It is currently the only submarine type in service with the Royal Norwegian Navy (RNoN).
These silent and maneuverable submarines are relatively small in size and have been regarded as the most cost-effective weapons in the RNoN.
Kongsberg delivers technology systems and solutions to clients within the oil and gas, merchant marine, defence, and aerospace industries.
Last year, the company reported total revenues of Nkr17bn ($2.12bn).
